Automation and Control Solutions
Aveng Grinaker-LTA is a leader in the fields of process control instrumentation, process systems solutions, engineered fire and gas detection systems and solutions. The Group supplies and supports field devices and systems, helping clients automate their production, processing and distribution operations in oil and gas, refining and other industries. The company’s highly qualified engineers are able to apply their solid plant experience to meet the most demanding industry requirements.
Welding
Aveng Grinaker-LTA welding processes and procedures are in accordance with the latest ASME 2010, EN ISO 15614-1 2008, AWS D 1.1 2006 and API 1104 codes. It has in excess of 400 welding procedure specifications covering most materials, including carbon steel P1 Group 2, stainless steel P8, all chromes, aluminium, 15 Ni Cu Mo and ASTM A 335 Grade P91.
The welding control systems automate most of the welding, quality control, construction progress management and planning operations, which cover fabrication and erection route sheets, weld cards, non-destructive examination requests and comprehensive weld reports. The Group’s welding operation is headed by a management team with international and local qualifications from institutions such as Certification Scheme for Welding and Inspection Personnel and South African Institute of Welding.
Shutdowns and Turnaround
Aveng Grinaker-LTA has specialist teams that are continually involved in the preparation, planning and execution of shutdowns and turnarounds on all the refineries in South Africa. This includes a permanent presence at most of the refinery sites, which enhances the company’s understanding of clients’ plants and systems while at the same time supporting any unplanned shutdowns or emergency situations.
Fabrication Facility
Aveng Grinaker-LTA's structural steel and pipe spool fabrication facilities are located in Vanderbijlpark, 60kms south of Johannesburg. These facilities are connected by road and rail to all major centres and have a monthly production capacity of 4 000 tons of structural steel and 35 000 diameter inches of welding. The pipe spool facility is currently being expanded to double its production and to provide for the training of welders. In addition to the 22 hectares on which the workshops are situated, Aveng Grinaker-LTA has a further
10 hectares dedicated to use as a laydown area, providing for the storage of client materials and completed pipe spools.
Projects
The most recent projects in which Aveng Grinaker-LTA has played a significant role, and demonstrated its multidisciplinary capabilities within the oil and gas sector, include an Octene plant that required the processing of some 8 000 isometrics totalling approximately 235 000 diameter inches of welding. An acrylic acid acrylates plant, with similar complexities, was also completed recently, as well as a polypropylene plant that included an input/output count of 10 500. During the two-year construction programme, Aveng Grinaker-LTA invested a total of four-and-a-half million manhours in the construction of this polypropylene plant - including the mechanical, piping, electrical and instrumentation requirements.
