Sibonile School for the Blind

CSI Project gives blind children a brighter future

In a heart-warming CSI initiative, Aveng Grinaker-LTA partnered with Sedibeng Brewery, Eris Property Group and Ilanga Oils in sponsoring a new girls’ dormitory at Sibonile School for the Blind in the Randvaal district.

The new hostel accommodation will enable the school to open its doors to more visually-impaired children - many of whom are currently on a long waiting list. “The school's limited accommodation had been a stumbling block in its goal to cater for the many visually impaired learners from the surrounding communities, and from further afield”, says Principal Bafedi Moruthane.

The hostel, built by Aveng Grinaker-LTA, comprises a 72-bed dormitory, locker room, bathroom and entrance hall. "What excites us the most about this project is that it impacts directly on the lives of 72 children, offering them a more hopeful and positive future," enthuses Andrew Owens, managing director of Aveng Grinaker-LTA Building Inland. Aveng Grinaker-LTA became involved in the initiative through its contract to build Heineken's new Sedibeng Brewery. Owens elaborates: "Sedibeng Brewery first approached us in 2009, with a view to join forces to assist the nearby Sibonile School in some way. The project took shape as we learnt more about this exceptional school, where, despite the challenges of limited facilities and funding, the principal and teachers are completely dedicated to providing the best possible education and care for visually impaired children. When we learnt that the limited boarding facilities meant children had to be turned away, it was clear that a new hostel was a priority."

On Friday 4 June 2010, the four donor companies handed over the new dormitory, aptly named Angel House, to Sibonile School.
